About Me

My name is Rachel Shirley. I’m an artist, writer, art instructor, and the creator of Oil Painting Medic. This resource forms a practical, solutions‑based source for artists who want to develop their oil painting technique and solve the problems that can arise in oil painting.

I studied Fine Art at Kingston University, graduating in 1986 with a Fine Art degree. Since then, I’ve spent decades painting, teaching, writing, exhibiting, and developing methods for learning oil painting. My work has been shown in exhibitions, featured in competitions, and is held in private collections.

Alongside my studio practice, I’ve written numerous art instruction books on portraiture, figures (including the Old Masters), landscapes, still life, drawing and colour mixing. These books expand on the themes explored throughout this blog.

I’ve taught art both privately and in group settings, helping students grow confidence, understand technique, and develop their own style. My approach has always been practical, helping artists to work through difficulties.

Oil Painting Medic grew out of this same viewpoint: that every painting problem has a solution, and that learning oil painting becomes easier when materials, technique, and troubleshooting are explained simply.
